The most caring and responsible thing you can do as a pet owner is to schedule an appointment for spay or neuter services. At Carlsbad Animal Hospital we recommend that all dogs and cats be spayed or neutered at six months of age, although it can be successfully done throughout adulthood, if necessary. Millions of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized each year, and spaying or neutering your pet can help to reduce this number. This procedure can have positive health effects on your pet's life, as well.
Having your pet spayed or neutered can have a positive effect on its health which can give it a longer, happier lifespan. For female dogs, it removes the possibility of your pet going into heat and its resultant problems. Also, it reduces the risk of many types of cancer and the appearance of mammary tumors. With male pets, neutering will reduce the chances of certain cancers, make it less aggressive, reduce the urge for it to mark its territory, and will make it less likely the animal will want to escape and roam the neighborhood in search of a mate.
Spaying is the term for sterilization when it concerns a female animal. We remove all the organs of reproduction: the fallopian tubes, the uterus, and the ovaries. This makes it physically impossible for your cat or dog to become pregnant or carry a litter.
Neutering is the medical term for male sterilization. In this procedure, the testicles are removed, leaving the animal unable to breed.
In both cases, your pet will likely become calmer and easier to manage. It's a myth that spaying and neutering cause an animal to gain weight. They'll need fewer calories on a daily basis, though, so adjust their feeding accordingly. Spaying and neutering don't change your pet's normal personality, it just removes some of the more aggressive tendencies.
Like any serious medical procedure, proper preparation is one of the keys to success. Withhold food for at least 12 hours before your pet's surgery, although giving water is encouraged. Our veterinary team will examine your pet thoroughly before the procedure to determine any special treatment that may be needed.
Your pet will stay overnight here at Carlsbad Animal Hospital, and we'll monitor its health to ensure it's healing properly. Once it's ready to go home, we'll affix a cone or other device to prevent your pet from licking or biting its stitches. Expect your pet to be quieter for a few days while it recovers, but for the most part normal behavior will return rapidly.
Spaying and neutering are crucial health issues for all dogs and cats. If your pet hasn't had one of these procedures yet, call our office to schedule an appointment at 760-729-4431.
