Dental Care at Carlsbad Animal Hospital
Does your dog or cat have stinky breath? Have your companion’s teeth been looking a little more yellow than white lately? Have you noticed that your pet has fewer teeth than he or she had before? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it could be a sign that your pet is suffering from some type of dental problem. Carlsbad Animal Hospital can help! Call us today at 760-729-4431.
If you’re not bringing your pet in for regular dental care and brushing their teeth at least three times a week at home, chances are your companion may have developed anything from plaque and tartar buildup to gingivitis to dental disease, a common yet serious medical condition that can spread infection throughout the entire body. At Carlsbad Animal Hospital, we want to help your pet beat the odds and enjoy a clean, healthy mouth for life. We offer complete, professional pet dentistry services to meet all of your pet’s dental health care needs.
To help prevent dental disease, we recommend having your pet’s teeth and gums examined professionally every 6 to 12 months. Dental care begins with a comprehensive physical examination. This is important to evaluate your pet’s general health. After the physical exam, your pet will be placed under anesthesia for a safe and painless sleep during the dental cleaning. We have to sedate dental patients, because they don’t know how to open up and say, “ah” for us.
After a thorough examination of the teeth and gums, our team will move on to the cleaning process. We use a high quality hand scaling tool, which is designed to remove tartar and plaque buildup from the teeth. We’ll also check below the gum line, using a periodontal probe, to look for signs of dental disease. An ultrasonic scaler is used to clean above the gum line while a curette cleans and smooths the teeth below the gum line. We’ll then polish your pet’s teeth to a vibrant shine and wash the gums with an antibacterial solution designed to prevent against future tartar buildup.
Should your pet already suffer from an existing dental problem, such as an abscess, tooth fracture or the onset of periodontal disease, we can help with that too! Our team is trained and experienced in performing a number of advanced dental care procedures, including tooth extraction and oral surgery. If we determine during our thorough dental exam that more advanced care is necessary, we’ll advise you on the next steps and the best course of action to take to help manage or eliminate the problem altogether.
Signs to Watch For
Pets that are suffering from a dental problem tend to exhibit certain tell-tale signs, such as:
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums
- Discolored teeth and gums
- Broken or missing teeth
- Bad breath
- Pawing at the mouth
- Excessive drooling
- Decreased interest in food or chew toys
- Difficulty eating
If you notice your pet showing any of these signs, it’s probably time for a dental checkup.
Finally, but equally as important, is the role you play in your pet’s oral health. Annual or semi-annual exams and cleanings aren’t enough to truly keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. It’s up to you to continue what our professional services started and maintain your pet’s dental health year-round. Our staff at Carlsbad Animal Hospital will gladly show you brushing techniques and provide as much advice and guidance as necessary to help you feel comfortable caring for your pet’s teeth at home.
